There are over fifteen thousand golf courses in the United States. These range from small local courses that are intended for recreational use to large swanky clubs with the purpose of bringing in money and hosting tournaments.
The bottomline is that no two golf courses are created equal. Some are easier to play while some give the PGA pros absolute trouble. Today we are going to throw aside easy and focus on the courses that were designed to give all golfers a rough golfing experience.
Here are five golf courses that are among the toughest in the United States.
1. Ocean Course
(Kiawah Island, South Carolina)
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort sits alongside the Atlantic Ocean. The unpredictable nature of the wind is one of the reasons this course is so challenging. It will not stay the same throughout the entire round. Your strategy for each and every shot will have to change just as frequently as the wind does. Also, watch out for the quick greens and oddly shaped trees. They are just ready to give you issues.

2. TPC Sawgrass
(Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida)
TPC Sawgrass is home of the Players Stadium and the PGA Tour’s Players Championship each year. This course has caused so much heartache for hundreds of professional golfers over the years. What makes this course so challenging is the distance and accuracy that each hole demands. The water hazards and bunkers are in the most inconvenient places and none of the greens are even. Every single is hole adds its own dose of difficulty at TPC Sawgrass.

3. Straits Course at Whistling Straits
(Sheboygan, Wisconsin)
The Straits Course at Whistling Straits has played host to the PGA Championship a few times in the past. Professionals absolutely dread playing there, but man, it sure is beautiful. The Straits Course sits above Lake Michigan and receives some winds that are hard for most golfers to handle. The high volume of bunkers and the length of the course in general are what defines the difficulty of the Straits Course.

4. Ko’olau Golf Course (Kaneohe, Hawai’I)
Ko’olau Golf Course was thrown in the dead center of the Hawaian jungle. That is the issue with this course: the jungle. The fairways are rather tight, so one bad tee shot will result in your golf ball being engulfed by that jungle. The ravines at the course often make matters worse. Steep slopes and uneven terrain are factors that lend to them being such an issue. Take plenty of golf balls if you plan on heading to Ko’olau for a round.

5. Tot Hill Farm Golf Club
(Asheboro, North Carolina)
Located in the rolling hills of North Carolina, Tot Hill Farm Golf Club, presents golfers with a landscape that have never seen on golf courses before. The slopes at Tot Hill Farm are quicker than elsewhere, and the green speed seems even more unpredictable due to the constant temperature variance within the area. The fairways are far from flat, and great accuracy is required to get your golf ball exactly where you want it to be for your next shot. There are also giant boulders everywhere. It would be a fun round, but be prepared to have Tot Hill frustrate your game a little bit.
